JESUS AS LOVER

Miryam, who appears in the New Testament much less frequently than we all think is the heroine and main narrator of this novel about love and religion and the religion of love.

Several frame narratives are embedded inside one another: At the Dead Sea some new scrolls turn up. At first the find is to be kept secret, but the finder, worried that the Vatican may censor them and spirit them away, makes sure that the world knows about them. It is the "Gospel of Mary Magdalene". It was written down by a young man who has been disappointed by the Jews, the Essenes and Christians, been left by his wife, and despairs of life, when he meets the aged Miryam in Jericho. She tries to help him, as she helps everybody, and one day she tells he story.

We also hear the story of Mariam, mother of Rav Yeshua, the Lord Jesus, who roams the country with his disciples and teaches the people. Until he realises that people worship him instead of opening their hearts to God and trust him. Miryam is also his disciple for a while. She comes from a rich, Hellenistic family, from a desperately unhappy marriage to a far too legalistic and pious scholar of the Torah. She falls in love with Yeshua, but he does not want to love her because he thinks that she would draw him away from his love to God and all human beings... But they meet again, when Yeshua feels himself trapped and has gone to the desert to reflect on his situation. There he realises that love for one human beings includes the love for all creatures and for all creation.

Everybody knows how the life of Jesus ran in accordance with the traditional gospels. How it runs in the novel you will have to read for yourself. It is a colourful novel, powerful and worth much reflection.
